Please note this is an intermediate class looking to explore further skills on the wheel, participants should be able to centre clay on the wheel as this will not be covered.

In a focused but relaxed group class setting, during five weekly sessions, you will delve deeply into wheel throwing with Edmund Davies. The aim of this course is to explore and experiment with throwing various forms, to gain confidence and build habits that you can take into your own making processes.

Each week will begin with a demonstration and then you will do a combination of throwing and trimming of your previous week's work.

Wednesday Evenings, 6:30-9:00pm

To join please choose your preferred starting date from the options listed above, and once you have paid we will be in touch with more details.

Week 1 Throwing ‘off the hump’: Throwing multiple smaller pots off one large lump of clay, also focusing on picking pots up off the wheel rather than sliding them off.
Week 2

Lids and Jars: Experimenting with techniques for enclosing a pot, a few different methods.

Week 3 Thrown and altered: Throwing with the intention to modify forms off the wheel, oval shaped pots, experimental plates, and all sorts.
Week 4 The Teapot: A final project putting together all the skills learnt, with some pointers on making a beautiful and functional teapot.
Week 5 Handles and assemblage: Combining all the components of the teapot, and making handles.

A week to glaze pots has not been included in this class structure, an additional session during our studio memberships to glaze your pots is possible to add for £25 but we anticipate participants may already be studio members, or have access to firing elsewhere and want to take their work away fired only to bisque.

Led by Edmund Davies, he is a studio potter who has spent the past 5 years teaching at various studios across London.

With a background in architecture, his work takes inspiration from modernist forms and utilitarian shapes, whilst paying homage to the artistic values of 20th century studio pottery.

In his classes there will be a light-hearted but focused atmosphere, emphasizing the importance in learning the fundamental skills of pottery, and the greater importance of challenging and experimenting with its traditions.
